Having screened other movies in the past about this topic, I know how I have felt during and after the film, but did not feel this way with this film. I know I am not the only one expressing this sentiment, as there was what seemed to be a unified awh-h-h-h of displeasure and disappointment as the film comes to a close. To the film s credit, there is a scene where a dog barks and it did seem to unnerve some audience members; it just woke me up as I was about to nod off after a delicious supper with friends.

What displeased me about this film is that it does not seem fresh and is assembled with similar scenes from REC, Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch Project, but the bits and pieces do not make one total, satisfying film. What annoys me with the film is the abrupt ending and it leaves me with the impression that they ran out of time to keep filming and try to patch it up with a stay tuned type of message.

William Brent Bell directs the film he co-wrote with Matthew Peterman and focuses on international cast members Fernanda Andrade (Brazil), Ionut Grama (Romania), Simon Quarterman (British), Evan Helmuth and Suzan Crowley. This is the script that could, but unfortunately, doesn t.

Maria Rossi (Crowley) confesses via a call to emergency responders in 1989 that she has killed three people. Her daughter Isabella (Andrade) is now 20 years older and is ready to research and document what happened in her home and why her mother is locked away in the Centrino Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Italy. Her journey to determine if her mother is mentally ill or demonically possessed includes a documentary filmmaker, Michael (Grama). Two young exorcists (Quarterman and Helmuth) agree to help Isabella, combining both science and religion, thinking they are ready to face evil in Maria. They are not prepared for one who has been possessed by many. Crowley does a good job looking creepy in her scenes, but it does not carry the film.

Fans of this genre of film may totally disagree and run to the theater on opening weekend, but many audience members in the Austin screening expressed their dismay. I do not recommend spending top movie dollars on this one; that is for sure. I hate to think there is a sequel, a two or a remake in the works.

Elizabeth Lopez, Cine y Mas
(Top)

MARK SALDANA'S REVIEW
RATING: 2 (Out of 4 Stars)

This week I watched a couple of films which had me laughing heartily. However, these films that had me in stitches do not fall under the comedy genre, even though they probably should. I do find great pleasure in films which have unintentional humor. I can t help it. Bad writing and poorly executed storytelling can often come across as comical. This is the case with THE DEVIL INSIDE, another entry of the found handheld camera footage horror variety. Based on my impression of the trailer, I actually wondered if this film would actually deliver genuine frights. At the same time, part of me was hoping that the film would deliver the unintended laughs which I often find in horror movies. As a possession film, this movie has a certain creepy factor to it and definitely has its moments; however, because it seemed like the filmmakers tried too hard to make this footage seem genuine, this film more than often had me chuckling than cringing in fear.

In 1989, an unauthorized exorcism of wife and mother Maria Rossi (Suzan Crowley), result in the deaths of those trying to help her. After a trial, she is found innocent by reason of insanity and is locked up in a mental hospital in Italy. Twenty years later, Rossi s daughter Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) and a filmmaker named Michael (Ionut Grama) travel to Italy to look into the possession and exorcism phenomena. Isabella and Michael go to the Catholic Church s school for exorcism and meet two priests Ben (Simon Quarteman) and David (Evan Helmuth) who both perform unauthorized exorcisms outside of class. Isabella enlists their help to determine whether or not her mother meets the criteria for possession. Ben and David determine that she is in fact possessed and take it upon themselves to exorcise her demons.

Written by William Brent Bell and Matthew Peterman, and directed by Bell, THE DEVIL INSIDE starts off creepily and has a few intense moments, but in their attempts to make this faux documentary seem real, some of the scenes come across as laughable. As most of the footage is through handheld cameras, it does have that slightly shaky feel, but is not quite as bad as the dizziness and motion sickness inducing CLOVERFIELD. Bell and Peterman try valiantly to produce a BLAIR WITCH style film about demonic possession. Quite honestly, though, the whole found footage gimmick has grown a bit old. THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT had the advantage of being one of the first movies to do this, not to mention an awesome marketing campaign which had a lot of people fooled into believing the footage is real. Bell honestly has fooled no one, deeming the use of the gimmick utterly pointless. A more straightforward filmmaking approach would have been sufficient. Of course, without a gimmick Bell and Peterman have little more to offer than a weak story.

I will give kudos to the cast who actually have some truly incredible moments. Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, and Evan Helmuth offer fine and believable performances. There is no disputing their talents for acting and improvisation which essentially makes the whole faux documentary experience more tolerable here. Suzan Crowley, who portrays the possessed Maria Rossi has some genuinely scary moments, but also some slightly hammy ones.

This is one horror motion picture which I would recommend waiting to watch on video. Nothing about it screams full priced theater ticket. It will make for an entertaining one time viewing. For people who enjoy watching unintentionally silly horror, this is not one to miss. I am sure some people will find it somewhat frightening, but I have seen plenty of horror movies to not really be all that fazed by this one. For me nothing has really topped the mother of all possession films THE EXORCIST.

Mark Saldana, The Movie Doc
(Top)
