This feature is filmed in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Panama City, Panama, featuring international filmmakers, cast and crew.

Nordic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur (Jar City, 101 Reykjavík) directs Contraband from a screenplay by Aaron Guzikowski, based upon the film Reykjavik-Rotterdam written by Arnaldur Indridason and Óskar Jónasson and is edited by Elísabet Ronalds (Reykjavik-Rotterdam, Jar City). The director of photography, Barry Ackroyd, who in 2010 was nominated for an Oscar (Best Achievement in Cinematography) for the film The Hurt Locker, provides his skills to have the viewer on the edge of his seat with the fast paced action on land, ships and air.

The film is worth heading out to watch if you are ready to add a dose of adrenaline to your weekend. The script does have a tiny bit of predictability as the viewer watches the character Farraday (Mark Walberg) with such determination. The viewer knows he is going to reach his goal. Otherwise, there are a couple of twists in the story and its characters that is worth the money in the theater.

A former smuggler, Chris Farraday (Wahlberg) has become an entrepreneur and father to two elementary age sons with his wife Kate (Kate Beckinsale). His happy and peaceful life comes to a screeching halt when he discovers his brother-in-law, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) is involved in drug deals with the recently released from jail, Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi) who is ruthless and has no mercy for family, especially not Chris Farraday.

Family is family and the Farraday family is forced to inherit and settle Andy s debt. He ll do anything to protect them and Briggs will not hold back. Farraday depends on his best friend, Sebastian Abney (Ben Foster) without a doubt to help take care of his immediate family as he navigates through a treacherous criminal network in Panama to help Andy out. Unfortunately, the treacherous network is much closer than he knows.

While in Panama, things have changed in leadership while out of the business and Chris must use his skills to negotiate with the Panamanian drug runner, Gonzalo (Diego Luna of Y Tu Mamá También, Milk), his crew, the cops, hit men and traitors before he loses what he loves the most.

The cast also includes Lukas Haas (Inception, Brick) as Chris friend; the ship s captain (J.K. Simmons), Viktor Hernandez as Edwin, his Panamanian connection; J. Omar Castro as Benito, among others.

The film is produced by Working Title s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Frost/Nixon), as well as Baltasar Kormákur, Stephen Levinson (television s Entourage, Boardwalk Empire) and Mark Wahlberg. Contraband s executive producers are Liza Chasin (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Big Miracle), Evan Hayes and Bill Johnson (I Love You, Man).

Elizabeth Lopez, Cine y Mas
(Top)
