I cannot more wholeheartedly agree with all of the nominations for recognizing this performance. It is truly amazing and one not to be missed.

If a movie viewer were to walk in without knowing much about the film actors in advance, except who the lead performer is, it is very likely that the question may arise as to when Streep will be seen. Actually, Streep is transformed by her make up to such a degree that she is not readily recognizable. If you are a fan of this actor, you can identify her unmistakable eyes though.

The Iron Lady, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher (Streep), the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom, based on a screenplay by Abi Morgan. The film is expertly done in a manner where the viewer sees her in her elderly, widowed life and learns of her accomplishments retrospectively.

One of the 20th century s most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from a grocer s family; her mother Muriel Roberts (Victoria Bewick) was a homemaker and helped with the business. Young Margaret Thatcher (performed by Alexandra Roach) was raised listening closely to her father, Alfred Roberts (Iain Glen) with a thirst to do something, was accepted to Oxford University.

She dedicated herself to a life in politics, but caught the eye of a young, successful businessman, Denis Thatcher (Harry Lloyd) and as a married woman; this image catapulted her to meet her political goals. As she tells young Denis initially, she did not want to wind up washing tea cups. The Thatcher marriage did yield a pair of twins, Carol (Olivia Colman as adult) and young Mark (Alexander Beardsley).

Jim Broadbent also provides an excellent performance as the elder Denis Thatcher that remains so alive for MT as he affectionately called her. It takes eight years for her to take action to really let go.

Thatcher was not dubbed The Iron Lady without reason; she smashed through barriers of gender and class to rule in a male dominated world at a time when it was literally unheard of. She did not want to be somebody but she wanted to do something in the world and that she did. This is an excellent slice of history, woman s history in fact and one that is priceless; especially when it is performed as only Meryl Streep can do.

Elizabeth Lopez, Cine y Mas
(Top)
