Unfortunately, the script by Lem Dobbs (Kafka, The Limey) left some things unclear about some of the characters, so a couple of us left the theater with more questions than satisfaction about the overall product. Counter-terrorist specialist Aaron Cohen is the technical advisor for the film.

Certainly for anyone who wants to see a woman kick some serious mixed martial arts butt, this is the film to see as Dallas born Muay Thai specialist and professional, Gina Carano, stars as Mallory Kane. She knows how to get the man-and I do not mean in any romantic way.

Kane is a highly trained covert ops specialist working in the male dominated industry for a government security contractor. An early scene has Kane chasing Barroso (Eddie J. Fernandez) relentlessly and is the first of many to fall. After successfully freeing Jiang (Anthony Brandon Wong), a Chinese journalist held hostage in Barcelona, and turning him over to Rodrigo (Antonio Banderas), she has friends with benefits time is with her co-worker Aaron (Channing Tatum) before returning to the U.S., but there is no bedroom scene in the film. It is surprising it was kept out, but good that it keeps the focus on her covert ops skill. It is the only time in the film. The R rating is for the violence and not sex.

It is on the second assignment from her hiring boss Kenneth (Ewan McGregor) that she goes rogue. She discovers that she has been double-crossed with intent to eliminate her when working with the other covert ops specialist, Paul (Michael Fassbender), as part of a married couple. Their date night turns deadly as he seeks to divorce her.

Kane escapes from Paul, but now is the target of skilled assassins who know her skill. Mallory realizes someone deep inside their network has betrayed her and seeks to find out who and why as she is crossing multiple international borders. A U.S. government suit, Coblenz (Michael Douglas), offers Kane a federal job to clear her name and reveal the real traitor. She is going to find out who double-crossed her, and put her and her father (Bill Paxton) in jeopardy; most certainly on her own terms.

Why is the Chinese journalist held hostage? What does he know, who cares and why? Why was Studer (Mathieu Kassovitz) willing to spend the money? Kane rides with a stranger from the café, Scott (Michael Angarano) and tells him her story on the run, but why this total stranger? Or is he?

The film has some good points, but the story could have been developed a bit more to have the viewer interested in some of the characters. It can be made longer, as we only see 93 minutes of Kane globetrotting. After paying fees to see the film and not too happy, I concur with the last statement Rodrigo (Banderas) makes at the end of the film. I will not repeat it here. Wait for a matinee or the video version.

Elizabeth Lopez, Cine y Mas
(Top)
