Even as a child I maintained the ritual of parking myself in front of the television and enjoying the glamour of the stars, the humor of the hosts and presenters, and the mixed emotions I ve expressed for those who won whether or not they actually deserved to win. This year I had the enjoyment of watching the Golden Globes at a party hosted by a friend.

My friend Nathan, also a big fan of movies, mentioned that he usually watches the film awards shows. He uses the award shows to familiarize himself with the quality motion pictures that are out in theaters. Before I got this sweet gig of reviewing movies, I used to do the same. These awards shows, whether or not I agreed with results, told me which films warranted my attention. Even the films that did not win, but were simply nominated might also be worthy. As I got older I came to realize that unfortunately films/artists I deemed worthy of winning sometimes were snubbed.

The Golden Globe awards show, which honors achievements in film and television, is presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association every January. The HFPA is an organization comprised of journalists working for publications outside the United States whose focus is the American film industry. This awards show is often considered the predictor of the nominees and winners of the Academy Awards which is usually held in late February or early March. The Golden Globes presents a less glitzy production than the Oscars in what appears to be a less formal ceremony but is still a well respected awards show.

So this year as I watched the 67th Annual Golden Globes at Nathan s and his wife Jenn s home, I was very disappointed. First of all host Ricky Gervais whom I think is a very talented and hilarious comedian had very little stage time. He did have a very funny introductory monologue, but was not allowed to do much else. When he was on stage introducing presenters he took the opportunity to plug his film and television projects now available on DVD. This was his running gag throughout the ceremony, which was cute at first, but got old. I guess he also thought it funny to be drinking while at the podium. The drinking itself did not bother me so much as he made it a point to bring it to everyone s attention. As talented as Gervais is, he really had very little good material with which to entertain his audience.

The other source of disappointment has to do with the results. First, I must state that I really don t have any opinions regarding the winners in the television categories. Most of my entertainment time is spent on watching films so I do not keep up with very many television programs. In the film categories, however, I am very opinionated. My overall opinion of the winners this year can be summed up in a couple of clichéd words, HIGHWAY ROBBERY! The heavily favored film THE HURT LOCKER was snubbed in the Best Picture (Drama) category in favor of James Cameron s unoriginal AVATAR. LOCKER s director Kathryn Bigelow, also favored to win in the Best Director category, was also snubbed in favor of Cameron. Don t get wrong I liked AVATAR. Technically and visually it is a gorgeous movie. In terms of story and writing, it does not present audiences anything new. It is a DANCES WITH WOLVES meets POCAHONTAS story in a science fiction alien setting. THE HURT LOCKER is a much better film and therefore, deserved wins in both of these categories.

These aren t the only categories with which I disagreed. Up next is the 82nd Annual Academy Awards whose nominees will be announced on February 2. The awards ceremony will be held on March 7.

Below is a link for a list of all nominees and winners. I had no opinion on the television nominees and winners but was disappointed overall with the picks for the film categories. Oh well! Like the Rolling Stones sing, "You can't always get what you want..."

Click here for a list of nominees and winners!

Copyright © MMVIII-MMIX TrueViewReviews.net

All text, images, logos and data contained within this site remain the sole copyright of True View Reviews.net.

All rights reserved and no part or parts herein may be used or reproduced without the expressed prior written consent of True View Reviews.net. <!--Copyright © MMVIII-MMIX TrueViewReviews.net & Renee's Reel Reviews.
